Monday
Welcome To The First Edition Of Our Weekend News
What is weekend news? It's dictation given by each Cardinal weekly on Mondays after returning to school from the weekend. It's another way for young children to strengthen language skills, develop longer sentence structure, gain skills in recalling and retelling information, understand sequence of events and to further develop memory skills.
As the weeks and months go by you will see your Cardinal gaining skills in all of the above areas. Some weeks you will notice that your Cardinal had a lot to say while other weeks not so much or the information given maybe from your Cardinal's imagination and this is okay. The purpose of the weekend news is to help foster language development.

Gym class with Josh was fun as always. Today the Cardinals worked on catching and rolling different objects. Josh first showed the Cardinals how to toss and catch the soft fluffy balls. When the music stopped we switched over to a different object which was the rings. Josh showed us how to roll the rings, then each Cardinal was challenged to run and see how many times they could jump over the ring. Then each friend got a scarf and Josh demonstrated how to hold the scarf using your thumb and pointer finger to toss the scarf up and catch it. At the end of class each friend made a choice of which object they wanted to explore more with.
The Cardinals enjoyed more large motor fun on the field near the tennis courts here on campus. We borrowed some balls from Josh and off we went.
Today Andrece joined the Cardinal class, she will be working permanently with us and the Catbird class. Welcome Andrece !!
Tuesday
In Art class with Johanna, the Cardinals worked on big movements. The Cardinals stood and warmed up their hands and shoulder muscles by following Johanna as she demonstrated pretending to swim (big arm movements). Friends then used a big piece of white paper and white crayons to create big drawings. Friends did three rotations of turning the paper to cover the whole paper with their creativity. The Cardinals were then instructed to make fast drawings on their paper by drawing super fast. The next step was to see if your paper had any space that did not have crayon and color it with slow movements. Johanna then gave out paint brushes, water and paints. The Cardinals continued being artists by designing their work. This work helped to continue our work of fine motor skills. Ask your Cardinal what they did in art class today?

Wednesday
The first Wednesday of each month, meeting for worship is held in our classroom instead of the music room or the meeting house. We told the Cardinals how we were going to spend our meeting for worship time today. We explained the activity we were going to do, which entailed two friends at a time getting two wooden blocks and placing them anywhere they chose on a large piece of black paper. Before we began we told the class two important rules to follow, "You can not move anyone's blocks and we need to do our activity in silence." Wow, our Cardinals did a fantastic job!!
After our work was completed and our silence time was over, we asked each Cardinal to take a moment and look at our creation. We then asked, what do you think our creation look like? Here is what friends had to say:
James V. - A city
Jackson - A camel
Addy - A castle
Surai - A house
Julian - The zoo
Ellery - Animals
Zoey - House
Ada - A big big city like Philadelphia.
Olivia - A Town
Grant - Animals
Ekin - New York city with the Empire State building.
Cooper - A city
Shanaya - A house
James M. - New York city
Lydia - A building
Soon, we were off to music class, Keisha met us at the door and handed out craves to friends. The Cardinals then began class by warming up to the song Space Unicorn, friends danced, jumped and giggled as they listened and danced with scarves. Followed by Keisha playing her guitar and leading us in singing our hello song Jambo. We continued with singing while marching, wiggling, rolling arms, jumping in place, tip toeing, flying in place and clapping hands as Keisha played her guitar. Friends were each given two egg shakers to play with until Keisha gave the signal on the drum to stop and focus on what's next. We then followed Keisha's directions by shaking our eggs while singing and making a pose. Friends then got a chance to create their own pose!!
Back in the classroom, we ate snack before taking advantage of having a creek on campus and so off we went for a creek walk. We walked in the shallow part of the creek, observed life there and saw one frog. Friends took an extra long time getting back to the classroom as their little legs were so tired! Ask your Cardinal how was your creek walk?
The Cardinals have been doing a wonderful job of being quiet and respectful of other friends working when walking through the hallways to our resource classes. Way to go Cardinals!! Today, we began Spanish class by doing our Spanish greetings. Followed by going over basic colors in Spanish, the Cardinals took part in Canima (Walk) where they walked around the classroom and then Alicia said para (stop). Alicia then called out a color in Spanish and the Cardinals did a great job at finding that color in the classroom and saying it in Spanish or trying to with Alicia's help. The color were rojo, verde, azul, negro, amarillo, morado, gris and cafè. Towards the ends of Spanish class a friend asked, "Alicia, you know that the Philly win". Soon, Spanish class was taken over by many friends making comments/opinions/asking questions and giving facts about sports and the Philly's. Friends also talked about sports and activities they do!! Today it was Cooper's turn to squeezed la vaca!
Friday
After our morning choice time in learning centers that were opened, the Cardinals had morning meeting followed by snack time. Friends then worked at tables and engaged in fine motor skills such as working with play-dough, continuing to practice cutting straight and zigzag lines with kid scissors and drawing/writing in shaving cream with their fingers. The Cardinals took a walk and played on the playground as well!
Enjoy your weekend!!
