The Cardinals start the day by having Spanish class with Alicia. We began by Alicia greeting us in Spanish and each Cardinal responding with how they feel in Spanish. What a super great job the Cardinals are doing! Alicia said, Buenos días Addy, ¿Cómo estás? - Addy then answer "muy bien or así-así " - "very good or okay". We then had a moment of silence, in which Alicia tapped her singing bowl and the Cardinals settled their bodies into silence. Followed by counting all the numbers on the hundred chart, which shows how many days we have been in school so far. The Cardinals repeated after Alicia and counted from 1-37 in Spanish! Friends then played a color bingo game. Each Cardinal got a bingo board and some chips, when Alicia called a color in Spanish if friends had that color they would put a chip on that color. Today it was Jackson's turn to squeezed la vaca!
Back in the classroom we had morning meeting and snack, then off to gym class we went. We met Josh downstairs in the lower school extended day space for gym class. Many Cardinals wanted to know why we were not in the gym? Josh explained that the gym floor is getting a bath (waxed) this made the Cardinals giggled and laugh!! Today friends acted out the movements of animals such as a snake, frog, elephant, cat, baby cheetah, dinosaur, pig, horse, ghost and a butterfly ghost. Friends practice throwing a soft ball up and catching it. We also rolled the softball across the floor in hopes of tapping a friend's foot (shoe). Friends needed to focus and not let the ball hit their shoes. Ask your Cardinal what they liked about gym class today?
Tuesday
Overhearing conversations about friends' costumes was the highlight this morning! The Cardinals enjoyed coming to school all dressed up. Friends playing on the playground in costumes was another exciting highlight. We also enjoyed a special snack which was provided by our class parents! Many thanks to you all!!
Our Cardinals with their families at Harvest Fest!!
Wednesday
All older lower school students are paired with our younger students by grade to build community. The Cardinals are paired with Danielle and Mindy's second grade class. We will partner together for special occasions such as meeting for worship, community time, projects, book reading and much more! Today, our second grade partners came to visit for a meet and greet! Four of the second graders used to be Cardinals!! Our Cardinals and second graders truly enjoyed their time together!
Before going to music class we had morning meeting and a two song dance party. Keisha told the Cardinals she was so happy to see them after not seeing them for two weeks. The Cardinals warmed up by dancing and making movements with scarves to the song GhostBusters. Friends acted out the book, Five little Pumpkins by Dan Yaccarino. This is how the book goes: Five little pumpkins sitting on a grate, the first one said, "Oh my, it's getting late". The second one said, "There are witches in the air." The third one said, "But we don't care!" The fourth one said, "Let's run and run and run!" The fifth one said, "I'm ready for some fun." And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight. Friend act the book out by swatting down on the floor like a pumpkin, then stood up and tap a finger on the back of a hand, move one hand from a shoulder up in the air, hold both hands out with palms up, run in place, dancing, finishing with rolling both hands around in circle in front of us.
After snack time and morning meeting, we read the book I AM Enough by Grace Byers two times! Stay Tuned!
Thursday
Spanish class began with Alicia greeting us at the door, followed by moment of silence and counting in Spanish. We have been in school for (40 days) cuarenta día and so we count to 40 by repeating after Alicia. We recapped the basic colors in Spanish. We then continue our work by learning some body parts in Spanish. We did Canima (Walk) where we walked around the classroom and then Alicia said, para (stop). Alicia then called out a body part, in Spanish, and the Cardinals pointed to that part on their body. Alicia then challenged the Cardinals by calling out colors and body parts at the same time. Today it was James M.'s turn to squeezed la vaca!
We have been cutting and ripping lots of different colored paper. And so we decided to create a class project. Some friends began to work on our class art project by gluing the ripped colored paper onto a big white canvas. While other friends painted with watercolors. Friends work together, shared space, ideas, turn taking, had conversations and created a wonderful collage. We then mod podged it! We will decide where in our classroom to display it!
Friday
Yesterday, three of our Cardinal friends came to school asking about their big friends/second grade partners. A teacher said, we will have more time together soon. One of the friends asked, "Can we do it today?" And so a teacher asked the second grade teachers, and today. Our second grader friends came back to visit!! They read books to us and we played board games together! After our partners left, the Cardinals asked to continue playing board games and so we did!
Enjoy your weekend!!
