The Cardinals working on a portrait of what they might look like at 100 years old.

Johanna introduced the Cardinals to clay in art class today. She read the book called, I love Guinea Pigs by Dick King-Smith. Johanna then asked friends if they ever worked with clay before. Some friends said no, some said yes! Johanna continued by giving friends time to explore with the clay and see what they think. Friends said it feels soft, smells like chocolate, feels cold, look like poop, it's mud, it's sticky and it's making my hands really dirty. Friends were then instructed to make a ball, then another ball but this time friends rubbed the clay in between their palms to create the body of their animal. As friends worked they decided what animal/s they wanted to create. At the end of class, Johanna asked friends to show by hand, "Who liked working with clay?" All but one hand went up. She then asked, "Who enjoy getting messy? Again all but two hands went up. Johanna told the Cardinals we will explore more with clay next class.  Ask your Cardinal what animal/s they made?

Wednesday
Our Cardinals were very excited as they arrived at school in their pajamas! Many conversations started even before jackets were taken off! The Cardinals have been counting down to this day on our Hundred Chart from the first day of school. Early this morning, we began decorating the classroom to begin our celebration of the 100 days of school!! Followed by making individual 100 day crowns, coloring the number 100, counting objects by 10s to 100 and building with  cups.

Friends helping with the making of pancake batter!

Off to Music class, the Cardinals went in their pajamas. Surai led us into the music room, after warming up to Toure Kunda by Fatou Yo. The Cardinals along with Keisha sang our hello song in our best Whooty voice. Afterwards we practiced our, Around the Haystack game. Next the Cardinal worked on their listening and movement skills for Over the Meadow book. Friends worked on creating movements such as rolling in the mud like a pig and jumping like frogs. After a game of Jack in the Box, the Cardinals and Keisha sang our goodbye song. Ask your Cardinal what did you liked about music class?

While the Cardinals were in music class, a teacher began making pancakes for our special 100 day snack. Friends chose which kind of warm pancakes they wanted, as some were made with chocolate chips. We also had strawberries, blueberries and yogurt. Friends started with 2 pancakes and fruit, however most Cardinals had 4 -5 pancakes! Yummy!!

After our special snack, the Cardinals each came up with a way for us to move our bodies, as we count by 10s to 100 for each movement. Here are the suggestions from our Cardinals:
Jackson - Jumping Jacks
Lydia - Swinging Arms
Cooper - Party Jumps
Suria - Jump Kicks
Willow - Crawl like a cat
Shanaya - Jump like a Cat
Olivia - Jump on one leg
GrantJump like a Kangaroo
Zoey - Spin
Addy- Spin like ballerina
James M. - Waddle like a penguin
Ellery - Jump like a Kangaroo
Ada - Hop like a bunny
Ekin - Pounce like a cat
James V. - Move like meep

This week, Ellery is our Hundred Chart helper and today she placed the number 100 in the 10s column to complete our countdown to 100 days of school!!!  Ask your Cardinal what three numbers make up 100?

The Cardinals shared some of their 100 days of school pancakes with Andrea, Tricia, Alicia, Erica, Johanna, Keisha, Michelle, Ashanti and our second grade buddies!
Ask your Cardinal what they like most about the 100th Day of School?

Thursday

The Cardinals worked on a journal entry titled, "What did you like about our 100th day of school? and Why?

We did our Spanish jobs routine such as greetings, reading the Calendar and the 100's day of school chart, practicing the numbers 1 - 20 and counting by 10's to 100 all in Español. Afterwards the Cardinals listened as Alicia read the book Sparkle Boy, the book talked about standing up for yourself and doing what makes you happy. Another key point in the book was that it is not okay for anyone to tell another person how to feel, act or be. These are all great lessons to start to learn from a young age. We all need to respect each other and this also starts from a young age.  Always being true to yourself is another key point to being an individual. The Cardinals had many thoughtful comments during this read aloud and at the end of the book. Today it was JamesV.'s turn to squeeze la vaca!

Friday

Choice Time

The Cardinals returned their books to the library, sat and listened to the book, Marvelous Cornelius read by Ashanti. Followed by friends picking a book and checking it out with Michelle.

The Cardinals had a fun time celebrating, The Chinese New Year of the dragon with their second grade. We listened to stories, played games,  ate lunch together and tasted some Chinese food! Yummy!!

                                Have a nice weekend!
